You Know You're Tired When....

...you fall asleep in your high chair. Poor baby had ear infection with high fever (probably roseola since it went around his classroom and he got the rash the next day after the fever broke ) and then the next week got sent home from school with hand, foot and mouth (yuck, but he had a pretty mild case...only 3 kids were left in the room when I picked him up). He seems to be recovered and weighed 19lb 12oz at his ear re-check appt (well, according to Dr. James' weighing anyway :-)).

Everchanging

The picture below is for Gma Chele :: Logan's eye color at 11 weeks -- a little out of focus but still mostly green with some browns creeping through...maybe it will be more hazel? Only time will tell, just gonna have to wait it out!
This kiddo can sleep pretty much anywhere! Here, he fell asleep sitting up on the couch where I perched him to give him a change of scenery. As James would say, "Silly Logan!"

Week of 2.1.2010

Monday 2.1.2010 :: "James enjoyed the company of his peers today as they explored the climber and refined their going-up-the-stairs skills. He also manipulated "Math Counting" books."

Tuesday 2.2.2010 :: Happy Ground hog's Day (he didn't see his shadow, 6 more weeks of winter, surprise, surprise)! "James had fun around the climber, he practiced coming down the stairs using his large motor skills." Can you tell he really likes the climber? He often climbs up the stairs and stands on the loft area, talking to anyone who will listen and trying to shake it or teeth on the railings :-)

Wednesday 2.3.2010 :: "James has been a very busy person. He moves around the room quickly exploring everything in sight. James also climbs up the steps to the loft area where he stands and makes lots of noise. When he is done, he goes down the steps carefully on his belly face down :-)" He also actually tried some table food at school today (he usually just tosses it on the floor) -- pears, Spanish rice, taco meat, cheese and tortillas at lunch time and tried some pretzel bread (he has never liked it) at snack time.Thursday :: James did not take his morning nap at school (he's been refusing it a lot lately -- he just wants to play play play). Needless to say, he was extremely tired! Fell asleep sitting up in his high chair. I gave him some Puffs while I washed up his dishes and turned around to see him snoozing :-)
Jim held him for a bit and then we put him on the ground to sit and try to wake him up since it was close to bed time -- he just rolled over and fell back asleep on the family room floor -- poor guy, but Easton enjoyed the company :-)
Friday 2.5.2010 :: No teacher notes but James was so tired that he refused lunch but perked back up at snack time when they celebrated one of his friend's birthdays! They brought Puffs for everyone to share (totally gonna steal that idea) and they wore party hats as they sang Happy Birthday to her (she's the one in the picture of James and her looking out the classroom window into the pod a few posts ago).
Above :: James' new favorite instrument to play is the washing machine. He likes to come "help" me do the laundry by playing me some music on his bass drum :-) He just loves music -- anything he can do to make a beat -- he figured out his friend Katie's xylophone on the first try, likes to use blocks to make noise, loved the wooden spoon and pot to bang together...research shows it helps with brain development, so PLAY ON, little man!
Below :: Jim caught a picture of James trying to play with Easton (who wasn't really interested in playing)
Playing with blocks for the first time at home. We took James to his friend, Mason's, 2nd Birthday party and Mason's Lego's were in the living room. We ended up making most of the figures and James just smacked them together, but we decided it was time to bust his out of the toy chest :-)
A video of James using the garbage can as a walker -- he just wants to go fast and is smart enough to know he is much more sturdy while holding on to something :-) We have to keep a close eye on him though because he knows how to open the can to get to the garbage..yuck! He also loves the "try to get into the cabinets" game...he's obsessed with opening and closing the doors and trying to get the pots/pans/lids out. We finally broke down and bought some of the locks because the game was getting pretty old and telling him the cabinet was "all done" wasn't really working effectively anymore :-)

Indy!

We went to Indy last weekend to attend Larry's going away open house as he was heading off on Tuesday to serve our country in Afghanistan. His orders are for 400 days* but we hope to see him again this time next year at a Welcome Home Uncle Larry party :) As an added bonus, we got to meet Ms. Avery Mae Folzenlogel -- the 2nd daughter of my friends from college, Toni and Eric. She was born August 5th and was adapting well to home life!
Kasey came over on Sunday to take photos for us as a Christmas present for GG and Pops. We had the whole gang there -- it was a bit hot (95 degrees) but there was a nice breeze and she got some awesome shots from what I saw (keep an eye on her website, http://www.kaseywalkerphotography.com/ for when she uploads some of the pictures). She took the big 10 people shots and then broke us down by family too...what a trooper! So, if you are in the Indy area and need a wonderful photographer, give her a shout out, she's fantastic!!!

James played a lot with Aunt Kris (KiKi) during our trip -- James ate up every second of it!

James actually napped in his Pack 'n Play for about 10 minutes one day last week -- I guess he naps better while holding on to both feet? :-)

Hangin' with Dad

James is almost 4 months old here in the pictures! So hard to believe -- but we are getting some FABULOUS pictures of him now as he smiles more often, can control his head more and "sit" better with support.

Jimmy reading Harry Potter Book 7 to James -- we've had so much trouble reading to him at bed time (he just cries), maybe he was still hungry (it was awhile back last time we had tried) or maybe he just wants to relax and read along Daddy -- looks pretty happy right here to me! I love this picture -- it should be a poster for the "READ" campaign, I find them much cuter than Serena Williams or George Lopez (nothing against them, I'm just biased in this case).
Smiles from both boys! Woo hoo!

Since James has learned to roll over from his back to his belly, we've found him in all sorts of positions in his crib. Honestly, it's driving me crazy! I haven't gotten a good night's sleep since he started doing it because he either a) rolls and gets mad about it bc he hates tummy time and has forgotten that he learned how to go from belly to back at 4 weeks old and wakes himself up crying or b) rolls and keeps knocking his head into the slats and then wakes up mad. So I've been up at 4am, 5am, 4:45am, etc for about 5 days now and once he wakes up he realizes he's hungry, so then I'm up for at least an hour while I change him, feed him and try to get him to fall back asleep...ugh...yuck! The doctor told us to flip him back over to his back if we find him on his belly to reduce the risk of SIDS but that just wakes him up. We've tried using rolled up receiving blankets on his sides, but he can move them and I'm pretty sure he'd just worm his way out of a sleep positioner too. I know he's strong enough to hold his head up to breath if needed, so I shouldn't be worried, it's just that the research shows that babies don't get into as deep of a sleep on their backs, so they are able to startle themselves awake to breath if they stop in the middle of the night (same reason they suggest swaddling them with their arms out now instead of inside the wrap)....oh the worries of motherhood! I just want my bug to be as safe as possible!!!

And For My Next Trick...

Jim went to check on James to say goodbye before leaving for work this morning and this is how he found James in his crib :-D What a little stinker! I have labelled the picture to show you where I put him down to sleep last night and where he ended up...seriously, he moved himself 3/4 of a crib during the night -- definitely a first here -- I guess in honor of his 7 week birthday :) That or he was really hot because the fan is down in that corner and I had set it up to blow more into the middle of his room (vs behind his dresser) because it was fairly warm in his room yesterday (especially with the door closed)! We keep a fan going to keep the air circulating in his room, just one of the things research shows help reduce the occurrences of SIDS, along w/ having a mesh bumper up (which I'm glad we put up when he started rolling 3 weeks ago, because he would have woken up with some appendages hanging out of the crib this morning) instead of the quilted bumpers that come in the sets.

He had himself all tucked up in the corner with his feet up the slats of the crib...maybe it was all the pent up excitement from the Blackhawks beating the Calgary Flames in the 1st round of the hockey playoffs -- Go Hawks!

Here James is workin' a half smile (you know, for the ladies) while on the changing table. He is 7 weeks old today and the non-gas related smiles are becoming more common (not here, this one was definitely gas related as he was 'riding the bike' like a champ for me while getting it all out before I changed him)! Some other tricks: he is much better at making spit bubbles, he is hitting the chime on his activity mat on purpose to make it ring (it looks like he is doing the elementary backstroke when he gets going on there, maybe the next Michael Phelps minus the pot drama), he can still roll from his belly to his back (thus avoiding any tummy time exercise), his neck is getting stronger and much more of his movements are voluntary, and he can make some pretty good eye contact and will find me and get that "Hey, I know you" look in his eyes and he is getting to recognize Jim too!He doesn't even cry when Easton wants to share the pillow with him!!! What a good brother! (Right after this picture, James punched E in the face and E just looked at him like "Dude, what was that for, I'm being nice and giving you more than half!")

4 Weeks Old!

Last night was much better than Saturday or Sunday night! I didn't have any dairy ALL day (woo hoo, good job me) and James was able to settle down for bed much easier than the past few days (it still took almost an hour to get him to sleep, but it was progress people). I found his Cubs booties (they were well hidden under some Winnie the Pooh shoes)and made sure this was the first athletic apparel he wore in his lifetime. You can't tell from the picture, but it was pretty funny because they were 3-6 month size and, thus, a bit big for his little feet :-)

Today James is 4 weeks old! I was sad bc I couldn't say he was a month old yet, that has to wait until next week. This pic cracked me up bc it looks like he's shading his eyes from the mommy paparazzi or something -- maybe he's destined for fame?

James and Mom chillin' during the day
Look at Mr. Too Cute!
I decided to be a nice wife/friend and put James in his White Sox sleeper that Aunt Amanda bought him last season when her and I went to a game -- of course, he wore it after wearing the Cub booties ;-) I'm pretty sure he didn't like being dressed in White Sox gear though, sorry Daddy, Amanda, Mikey and all you other south side fans, this boy may be cheering for the north side (we practiced singing Go Cubs Go last night after they beat the Astros). I took him out of the outfit though bc he bunched his feet up and was stretching it out, so that way it can still fit him when he gets a little bigger (and Daddy puts him in it). Alas, James did see the White Sox win today as Jim Thome (we like him) hit a 2-run shot in the 8th to take the lead.

Play Ball!

YEAH FOR BASEBALL!!!

I have been waiting patiently for baseball to start again (I miss it sooo much) and it's finally here! How relaxing to hear Joe Morgan and Jon Miller calling a game :) I wanted to get James in the spirit of the season and dress him in some baseball gear, but I couldn't find his Cubs booties (I think Daddy may have had something to do with that) and he's still in NB sizes but all his Cubbies clothes are at least 3-6 months, so he'd be swimming in them and end up just stretching them out w/ his crazy busy kicking legs. I am not putting this child in White Sox grub unless they are actually playing and it's the only sleep 'n play left in the dresser (which may have to happen tomorrow since they wussed out and cancelled their game -- yes, it's very cold but they could have gotten the game in as there isn't too much snow or rain today as expected -- and the dresser is getting bare) and he doesn't have any Indians sportswear (although they are having a rough start to the season down in Texas as Cliff Lee got rocked today)...so James ended up in his "Make Way for Ducklings" (<--pretty cool teacher website link) onesie and a layette that has red/blue/white fire trucks and puppies on it to get close to Cubs/Indians colors :-)

On a non-baseball note, James had us up until 3am again last night. We think the lil guy may have an intolerance to lactose and he was pretty miserably gassy as I had some cheese yesterday :( Poor guy and all Mommy's fault :( So I'm going to try and cut out the dairy too. Add it to the caffeine, which I was already doing during pregnancy and that wasn't so hard, and tomatoes, which I'm slightly allergic to also, so no biggie -- but dairy! I have been loving my cereal lately and we just bought some yogurt and cottage cheese that will sadly go to waste now because Jim won't eat it. I hope this works and helps his belly out because we need to sleep! He won't sleep for more than 10-20 minutes if he is lying down alone unless we put him down around 3-5am. Needless to say, that doesn't make it easy for us and we're getting frustrated at night. It's amazing how much easier it is to deal with a screaming child when there is daylight outside! I actually had to have Jim get the Moby wrap from downstairs so I could at least hold James while I sat in the glider and rocked him. Of course, he fell asleep quickly and after rocking for 2 hours and figuring he was sound asleep, I tried to put him in the cradle and PRESTO! within 5 minutes, waterworks (well, no water yet as his tears haven't come in fully, but screaming none-the-less). So Jim took him to change him and give him a bottle (don't worry, it was not formula) while I caught a few minutes of shut eye and he ended up rocking him from 3-5am and then James finally slept in his cradle while we both got to sleep. 5 hours of broken up sleep is rough -- this infant stuff is not for the weak of heart I tell ya! We thought we had it good last week when he was actually sleeping from 12-5am...hopefully the growth spurt will finish just as the lactose is out of my system and all of this will be resolved!

Back to baseball: I'm in heaven, 5 games on espn and espn2 today! Sorry 'Nati fans, but I just watched the Reds lose to the Mets -- good game though and I love watching Brandon Phillips...now it's Yankees/Orioles time -- always hoping for a Yanks loss (sorry Sheryl). Cubbies game time in less than 2 hours -- LET'S GO BIG Z!
